My 2002 Orlando / New Orleans Vacation. 15 days, 3530 miles.
We took a trolley though the Warehouse District and Lafayette Square, then stopped in at the Museum of Contemporary Art, where they had the "Missing: Last Seen At The World Trade Center On September 11, 2001", a collection of the missing posters that went up all over New York on that fateful day. I had heard about it on the way to Slidell, while I was being rained on by Edouard.

A visit to the Riverwalk Marketplace for a bite to eat, then took the Riverfront trolley back to the French Quarter to pick up my car.

Chalmette National Battlefield - September 10

Chalmette Battlefield
The decisive defeat of the British during the War of 1812 occurred here. Chalmette National Battlefield, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.
Just upriver from the French Quarter is the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve (Chalmette Unit). Whew. I wonder if the sign painters get paid by the sign or by the letter...

There are two things of note here. One is the Chalmette Battlefield, where the Americans had a decisive victory against the British in the War of 1812. It was the last war between the Brits and the Americans. It also gave America undisputed ownership of the Louisiana Purchase.

You know Johnny Horton's song The Battle of New Orleans? That was here. Heh.

The second thing of note here is the Chalmette National Cemetery, which hold those soldiers that died during the Civil War, though it has the remains of some who died in the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War, and even some WWI, WW2 and Vietnam vets.

Avery Island - September 11

The next morning, we started for home. Avery Island, where Tabasco Sauce is made, was almost on the way, so we stopped in to see the factory where the iconic hot sauce is made.

Hot Springs National Park - September 12

I was going to find the origins of Route 7 from its start in the South and take it North. It might have been the first time Jo was on this road.

Anyway, it goes right through Hot Springs National Park, so we stopped in and went to the top of the tower. Ugh. I was more comfortable right before my hernia operation.

Scenic Route 7, Arkansas - September 12

There were two pictures this trip (both of insects) which would convince me to retire my Nikon. The praying mantis was one of them...

We also stopped in to see the Buffalo National River. I think I've stopped here every time I've driven Route 7. At least a half-dozen times.

Final Thoughts

It was a pretty good side trip from my now almost standard trip to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. It was also pre-Katrina, so I have no idea what happened to some of the places I visited.

The Honey Island Swamp tour would lead to other similar local/specialty tours, like an Everglades Air Boat Tour and a Colorado River Jet Boat Tour.

This vacation would also see me retire film and fully embrace digital technology. The Canon G2's 4MP resolution and image quality didn't *quite* reach 35mm, but the difference was finally minimal enough that the advantages of digital outweighed the advantages of film. I had already gone to a digital darkroom, this was just the final step.
