Great Falls was the first real obstacle for the Corps of Discovery, mile after mile of rapids and waterfalls, where the canoes and supplies had to be portaged by foot. Worse, because of their determination to follow the Missouri to its source, they missed a shortcut that could have saved them a couple of hundred miles of travel, though they couldn't have known it at the time.

The real problem was, because of this delay, they would encounter snow in the Bitterroots.

US-89 Link

US-89 is a remarkable road that follows some of the most scenic areas of the West from Canada to Arizona, and along the way passes through (or comes within a few miles of) over a half dozen major Western Parks. Glacier to Yellowstone to Grand Teton, Bryce, Zion, Glen Canyon and Grand Canyon.

I've actually frequented this road quite a bit, but in a disjointed, non-continuous fashion.
