Since Black Canyon of the Gunnison was right there, we'd stopped in.
You would think by then I'd have anticipated something unique, since it was a National Park, but I was still surprised at some of the features of the park, like narrow and really, really (really) deep canyons.

Oh, that warning sign isn't kidding. The grades this road takes down to the river are some of the steepest I've come across.
A big SUV started tailgating me about halfway down, and I finally had to pull over. Idiot was riding his brakes instead of downshifting.
Sellers should be required to teach big SUV owners how to drive them, lol...

I drove US-50 (in Colorado) from Montrose to Salida, where I stayed for the night. Along the way is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, which was much more stunning than I expected, then through the Curecanti National Recreation Area, and over the remarkable Monarch Pass in the San Isabel National Forest. |

The Million Dollar Highway is a spectacular mountain road which crosses the mining country of Western Colorado. I drove it from Durango to Montrose in Colorado, a magnificent drive I'd recommend to anyone. |
