The Idaho National Environmental Research Park is an 890 square mile research park in Southeast Idaho. It was established in 1949 by the Atomic Energy Commission to test various nuclear reactors, fuel processing plants and other related facilities.

As a result, Arco, the closest town, was the first city lit by electricity generated from nuclear power.

One of the experimental reactors built, was the Experimental Breeder Reactor-1, or EBR-1. It's a breeder reactor still in operation, and no, I'm not going to go into the physics of how it operates. This is a picture site, lol...

But it is open to the public, on a seasonal basis. It might be the only nuclear power plant on US-20.

The first time I passed by was on 9/11/2001, and the place was closed for the season by then anyway. The second time, I was delayed by roadwork twice (and around here, that mean serious delays with no available detours), so I only had about 30 minutes inside the facility. Not nearly enough time before we were kicked out...

I've travelled US-20 (in Idaho) from the Western Border where it joins I-84 to Rexburg. The portion from Mountain Home to Idaho Falls was known as Goodale's Cutoff, a shortcut on the Oregon Trail skirting the basalt lava fields rather than following the Snake River.
