Makoshika is a variant of the Lakota phrase, "Mako Sica", or "Land of Bad Spirits" or simply, "Bad Lands". It was founded in 1953 as a Montana State park.

About 65 million years ago, this entire area was a sub-tropical floodplain, where dinosaurs roamed and ruled the earth. Up to 10 dinosaur species has been found here, from Triceratops to Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Clark passed within a mile of this area in 1806 while travelling the Yellowstone River, but I'm not sure he would have enter the Badlands. I doubt he would have even known they existed...
