Along the Gunflint Trail (MN-12)

There are historic sites and trails and other points of interest all along the Gunflint, but some of the signs have disappeared over the years, and you sometimes need an accurate map to find them. I'm sure they're all documented on the web by now, something that didn't really exist when I was first up the Gunflint.

Honeymoon Bluff

Honeymoon Bluff isn't really just off the Gunflint, but a short way up Clearwater Road (county 66), and affords some very nice views of Hungry Jack and West Bearskin Lake.

Magnetic Rock Trail

I previously mentioned the iron-rich rock around here, and it provides one of the geologic oddities of the area. It's a 40 foot tall monolith that came right out of 2001. It's made of magnetite (I think) and will cause any compass to point toward it.

It was pushed upright during the last ice age, and when the forest has burned down around it, it stands like a navigation marker that can be seen for quite a distance. When the forest grows up around it and hides it's existence, it becomes forgotten. It took someone quite a while to find it again around 1940, and is now a easy 3 mile trail.

Since these pictures were taken, a forest fire did indeed burn the area. If you search for pictures, the difference is quite startling.

End Of Trail Campground / Seagull River

There are some very nice viewpoints from riverside cascades to overlooking bluffs providing scenic views. I've never camped here. I've outgrown that. :-)

Flour Lake

Flour Lake is a typical border lake that's somewhat narrow but longer in the East-West direction. It's a very pretty lake (as most are up here), and we had more luck fishing it as a walleye lake. I stayed at the Golden Eagle Lodge in 1988 and 1992.
