Introduction
This page contains what-used-to-be five other distictive pages. During the version 5 upgrade, I decided it was stupid to upgrade all five pages, and combined them into this single page. The reason this is the "Florida" Gulf page, is because New Orleans, Galvaston, and others are Gulf cities as well.
Pensicola Beach, Florida
I was going to stop in at the Gulf Islands National Seashore, but I got there before it opened. And they actually gate it off. Bummer.I took some pictures of the sunrise, and was going to go drive County Road 399, which follows the barrier islands, but it was closed. Bummer, again.

Siesta Key, Florida
I was only in Siesta Key for a few hours, when we took a trip up from Venice just to see the place.
It's a long barrier island, with a main road up the center of it. On both sides of the road, there are hotels and condos on every square foot of the island. I'll bet it's insane during the tourist season.
Marco Island, Florida
We stayed on Marco Island for a night before going into Everglades National Park. It was just another gorgeous Gulf Beach, white sands, warm temperatures (it was mid-October), beautiful sunset...
The next day, we'd visit the East end of Everglades National Park and Key West.
Marco Island, FloridaKey West, Florida
We went down to Key West, because it was Key West. We only spent one night. Should have spent at least two. But hey, the room was comp'd. (Paid with perk points.)Venice, Florida
Venice is a nice, quiet little tourist town that's probably a madhouse during the Summer season, but I was there in December. Stayed in a room that overlooked the Gulf. Can't beat that...
Images include Casey's Pass, Venice Pier and Caspersen Beach.

Caspersen Beach
I admit, I was skeptical. Go to a public beach, dig through the sand with a wire mesh basket on a stick, and come up with fossilized sharks teeth millions of years old.
Well, heck if we didn't pull in a dozen. Evidently, the Venice area has a high concentration of them, and every storm the beaches get replenished.
You have to go to a "raw" beach. Tourist beaches like Siesta Key and Venice Beach are groomed, with new sand covering the old...

Inn at the Beach. Venice, Florida | |
---|---|
Inn at the Beach is a motel right across the street from Venice beach. I stayed in a unique, small room (which I suppose could be a second bedroom to the suite next door if you use the connecting door), which faced the Gulf of Mexico. Too bad the weather was crap, but I can hardly blame the management for that. :) |
